NYC condemns invasion of offices by protesters

Jemima Beukes
The interim National Youth Council (NYC) has strongly condemned the invasion of its offices by a group of discontented youth, labeling it as an orchestrated attempt by certain individuals to destabilize and overthrow the council.

In a statement, the interim council affirmed that its members were lawfully appointed and dismissed allegations of mismanagement as false and defamatory.

“We equally reject the false and malicious allegations against the interim council by way of a misleading press conference confirmed by the illegal gathering. The council was supposed to have a meeting on 10 January 2025, but it was postponed. The reinstatement of suspended director Calista Schwartz-Gowases was not on the agenda and is subsequently outsourced for an additional investigation,” the statement clarified.

Claims of external influence

The interim board also alleged that the group of angry youth had backing from the former board, which is reportedly seeking the reinstatement of Schwartz-Gowases. She had been suspended last year amid allegations of serious misconduct.

Schwartz-Gowases was implicated in an audit report for her involvement in a questionable contract that the council entered into. Her suspension was instituted to ensure that formal disciplinary proceedings could take place without any interference. This decision was approved by Finance Minister Iipumbu Shiimi.

The interim council reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity and transparency of its operations while calling for patience and cooperation as investigations into the matter continue.
