Sweet relief for arid south
Great was the joy in the arid south when showers fell in places on Monday. Between 2mm and 10mm fell at Nabibis, about 30 kilometres west of Helmeringhausen.
The farm Welbedacht on the Kalk Plato, 45 kilometres south-east of Mariental, received 5mm, while a quick 4mm fell on Langverwacht, 33 kilometres west of Gochas.
At Dassiesfontein, 35 kilometres west of Mariental, 2mm was thrown from the rain gauge.
At Elisenheim north of Windhoek, 8mm of rain fell during the night, 3mm in the Eros in the capital, 2mm at Okahandja and 1.5mm at Kappsfarm east of Windhoek.
More dust than rain apparently occurred between Grünau and Klein Karas, with only drops northeast of Mariental and near Gochas.
According to a well-known Namibian weather expert, the upper air system's energy has run its course, and it will now get hotter and hotter.
Dam levels
Meanwhile, NamWater's dam bulletin said the Von Bach Dam is 11.1% full and the Swakoppoort Dam 23.1% after water was pumped from Swakoppoort and northern sources to Von Bach.
The City of Windhoek has again urged residents to save water after 8% more than the target was used.
In the east, the Daan Viljoen Dam is 7.2% full and the Tilda Viljoen Dam in Gobabis stands at a paltry 2.8%.
Southern dams are collectively 58.6% full, with the Hardap Dam only 7.8% full. The Neckartal Dam stands at 79.8%, the Naute Dam at 38.6% and the Oanob Dam at 36.1%.
