Namibia’s interior forecast to receive over 25mm rainfall in December
Below average rainfall over most of the country
Patches of average to above average rainfall were confined to areas around Keetmanshoop, Rehoboth, Grootfontein and the central coast.
Weather predictions indicate rainfall below 25mm over the extreme west and most southern parts of Namibia during December.
Elsewhere, the rest of the country is expected to receive above-normal rainfall of over 25mm.
This is according to Climate Watch for October, issued by the Namibia Meteorological Service.
Climate Watch further indicates that the month of October was very dry, with only a few places reporting rainfall. However, significant amounts of rainfall were observed over the north-eastern part of Namibia, with Ndonga Linena receiving 70mm, Ngoma 36.5mm, Katima Mulilo 35.5mm and Otjituuo 33mm.
According to Climate Watch, below average rainfall was observed over most parts of the country, while patches of average to above average rainfall were confined to areas around Keetmanshoop, Rehoboth, Grootfontein and the central coast.
Globally, October was the second warmest month, with a surface air temperature of 15.25 degrees Celsius. This is 0.80 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for October, notes Climate Watch.
Furthermore, the average surface air temperature for Namibia was 23.9 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees Celsius above the October 1991-2020 average.
“The bulk of the country observed warmer temperatures above 23 degrees Celsius for the month, while cooler temperatures below 23 degrees Celsius were observed over the extreme south and extreme western part of the country,” Climate Watch indicates.
The cooling in temperature over the extreme southern part of the country was due to the effects of cold fronts traversing from west to east.
The northern parts of the Kunene, Omusati and western Ohangwena regions experienced above average temperatures ranging from 1.5 degrees Celsius to 3.5 degrees Celsius, above the 1991-2020 average during October.
The Windhoek area and places along the southern Namib observed 2 degrees Celsius above the long-term mean.
Meanwhile, the mean surface air temperature for December is expected to exceed average temperatures.
The mean temperatures, between 15 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, are expected along the coast and central high ground, while the remainder of the interior can expect mean temperatures between 26 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celisius.
