Moisture flows in from Angola

Cooler weather expected
While temperatures remain high, they are expected to drop during the course of the week.

Favourable rain conditions and cooler weather are predicted for the northeast, east and central highlands after some rainfall occurred over these areas this past weekend.

Isolated thunderstorms were expected yesterday in parts of the Ohangwena, Oshana, Otjozondjupa, Kavango and Zambezi regions.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Service (NMS), yesterday the interior was expected to be partly cloudy and hot to very hot, while the south was expected to experience moderate to warm conditions with ongoing windy weather. A weather alert was issued for cooler weather that will continue in the south due to two cold fronts in the western and southern Cape in South Africa.

According to NMS chief weather forecaster, Odilo Kgobetsi, more moisture is breaking through from Angola which will bring rain. He said the system remains intact and the moisture models still show strong rain conditions for the rest of the week.

"Parts of the central north can still expect rain so far, such as Okaukuejo and the Omusati regions, as well as the east and parts of Otjozondjupa and the central highlands," Kgobetsi said.

"Temperatures remain high across parts of the country and are expected to drop later this week due to the cloudy and rainy weather. The system will clear over the western parts by Wednesday or Thursday, but by the weekend a lot of moisture will move in again and rainy conditions will continue eastwards over the northern and central area," Kgobetsi said.

Rainfall numbers

Tsumeb had a shower of 3.5 mm Monday, with 5.5 mm recorded at the town's airport at the weekend and 20 mm at Tsintsabis.

At Grootfontein between 10 mm and 42 mm was recorded over the weekend, at Kayova River Lodge at Rundu 18 mm, 16 mm at Olienhoff guest house at Otavi, and 10 mm at Gobabis, with showers also reported northeast of Gobabis.

About 70 km northeast of Windhoek, 6 mm was measured, while 4 mm was recorded at Kapps Farm and 4 mm on the farm Onverwacht, 20 km southeast of Dordabis.

In Otjomuise in Windhoek, 14 mm was measured, 3.2 mm in Pionierspark, 3 mm in Hochlandpark, 2 mm in Olympia and Cimbebasia, as well as 2 mm at Leonardville in the Hardap Region.

According to meteorologists, it is currently expected that the El Niño phenomenon may weaken further, with the possibility that a weak La Niña system may develop at the beginning of the summer.

Experts emphasise, however, that there is still "considerable uncertainty" about the predictions regarding these climate phenomena and are continuously monitoring them.

Meanwhile, Drought Relief Namibia is once again calling on Namibians to hold a prayer day for rain nationwide in all churches on Sunday.
