MTC introduces e-SIM service for travellers

Elizabeth Kheibes
MTC has announced the launch of Namibia's first electronic subscriber identity module (e-SIM) solution for its customers who travel internationally.

MTC explained that, in doing so, it becomes the first to bring this innovation to Namibia.

"For now, the MTC e-SIM technology solution will only be available as a data-only service, offering data-centric connectivity – enabling online browsing, WhatsApp (and other apps) calls, and any other data-driven usage – to its outbound customers, i.e., customers travelling outside the country," the company said in a statement.

"An e-SIM card is a virtual card that identifies your device via a network. An e-SIM is a form of programmable SIM that is embedded directly into a device. It allows you to land at your destination, activate your e-SIM, and gives you instant connectivity and freedom to roam effortlessly," the statement reads.

Better travel

MTC's acting chief commercial officer, Elton Katangolo, explained that this step will allow customers to travel internationally without having to buy another SIM.

"When you travel the world without an e-SIM, you are required to buy a second physical SIM card upon arrival at your destination. However, with e-SIM, you do not need to buy any cards, and you will be able to add an international data plan to your device upon arrival in the country of your destination,” Katangolo said.

“Customers with e-SIM-compatible devices can register, choose a plan and activate their e-SIM on our web portal, where we have various packages designed to suit different travel needs and easy top-ups available for continuous connectivity," Katangolo added.

He said Namibia has been due for an e-SIM solution since 2021 but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"With this groundbreaking solution, our customers travelling outside the country can now enjoy seamless internet access and the convenience and flexibility of staying connected without the need to buy a new physical SIM card," he said.

Customers can access MTC e-SIM through https://esim.mtc.com.na.
