The quality of performances and the energy in the atmosphere were exciting as Athletics Namibia's Grand Prix series resumed at Windhoek's Independence Stadium.
The event started with the men’s 5 000 metres, where Paulus Daniel from Namibian Correctional Service finished in first place with a time of 14:33.23, followed by Paulus Simon, also from Namibian Correctional Service, in a time of 15:00.12.
In the women’s 1 500 metres, Saara Shikongo scooped first place with a time of 4:40.52, with Alina Armas and Tresia Kakede in second and third.
Athletics Namibia is extremely optimistic and positive about the competition.
“Due to the lack of contact sports in the past we want to give our athletes the opportunity to compete and therefore we will still be having the fourth leg in Rietfontein and the fifth leg will be in Oshakati,” said Berthold Karemendu, the competition director.
It has been quite a challenge to restart athletics in the country after the impact of Covid-19 in the previous two years. Athletics Namibia is, therefore, organising a series of events for athletes to prepare for the national championship scheduled for 2 April. More events are planned for the rest of the year.
Several international events are also lined up for the year. The African championship will take place in Mauritius in June, the world championship will be in the United States, and the Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom in July and August .
