Cricket development takes centre stage
The Night Cricket Bash tournament kicked off at the Trustco United cricket grounds on Friday.
Captain of the Etosha Giants Louis Burger expressed excitement after his team won their first match of the Night Cricket Bash tournament.
The event hosted by Namspire is set to run until the end of March.
The first game of the tournament had the Etosha Giants facing off with Southern Sparrows U/12 in a close game which saw the Etosha Giants claiming the victory against the Sparrows.
Louis Burger said: “I feel really good about the win. I’m proud of our bowling performance. Our batting could have been a little better but overall, I’m happy we won.”
With junior cricket events usually taking place in the morning or afternoon, Namspire decided to spice it up and have the cricket games played under lights to get the kids ready for the international stage, as cricket is not always played during daylight hours.
Namspire has been organising the event for the past four years, with the current tournament being the fifth.
Head coach Dixon Vambe, who is the CEO of Namspire Cricket, urged youngsters who are interested in cricket to register and be part of the team to develop as a young cricket player.
He added that they are very passionate about cricket and want to see kids flourish in Namibia.
“The first night of the Cricket Bash was quite interesting and it was a success.
“The kids had fun and they played really well. I’m happy the parents came to support in numbers and I hope it will be the same throughout the whole tournament.”
With the second game set to take place on 23 February, captain of the Southern Sparrows Gilmer Horn has signalled their title aspirations.
“We are all excited that the tournament is back. We have prepared well and we are ready to challenge for the title.
“If you love cricket or any sport you should definitely play and make the most of it and, most importantly, have fun,” Horn said.
