Horse racing on the cards

The Epukiro and Okahandja horse racing clubs are jointly hosting races on 26 March at Okahandja.
The event will see horses competing in the Nambred beginner, Nambred maiden, Nambred graduation, D-division, and A-division thoroughbred divisions.
One of the organisers, Iritjiua Murangi, is inviting horse owners to register their horses for what is expected to be a fast and furious battle of some of the top racehorses.
“We are inviting all racehorse owners to join us for this important event. This will be our first for the year and we want to make it as successful and fun as it can be.
“There will definitely be some of the best horses in the country as they battle for bragging rights,” Murangi said.
The event will also be used to promote the wellbeing of jockeys, which is believed to have been overlooked.
Murangi emphasised the importance of making sure that jockeys are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
“At this event, we will be inviting companies that provide life insurance. We are doing this because we want to take a step forward by providing jockeys with some of these needs.
"These guys are very important to the sport and we definitely have to make sure that they are covered.
“Their safety and health are some of the things that we are emphasising and prioritising,” Murangi said.
Murangi, who is also a horse owner, invites sponsors to come on board.
“We are hoping the sponsors can join us in making this event a success at Okahandja.
“The industry has been showing great promise and development and it is all thanks to those that heard our call,” he said.
