Visigoth, Starlile and Burundi rivalry ignited
Over 60 horses entered for Okahandja race
The rivalry between Namibia's top horses will be ignited after confirmation that Visigoth, Burundi and Starlile are all expected to race at the Okahandja/Epukiro Horseracing competition slated for the garden town on Saturday.
Organiser Iritjiua Murangi has confirmed that over 60 horses have been registered for the races slated for Okahandja on Saturday.
Okahandja Horseracing, in collaboration with Epukiro Horseracing, are hosting the event in order to provide a platform for horse owners and jockeys to get an education on social security.
The event also serves as preparation for a racing event in Botswana next month.
“I must say that it is all set as we have already received entries from 60 horses. Social Security also has confirmed that it will be present to create awareness on the importance of having jockeys registered.
“It is indeed poised to be a very good event, given the horses and rivalry on display,” Murangi said.
Famous horse Starlile will be the favourite in its own backyard given the form it had towards the end of last year in the open 2000 metre import category.
Starlile’s owners and fans will however be wary of Burundi, who got the better of Starlile last season.
Visigoth remains a thorn in the flesh of Starlile and Burundi despite a poor 2021 season.
The horse from the Aminuis Horseracing Club was unstoppable during some competitions in 2020.
Visigoth's form dropped and many are hoping to have the horse they love back to his best.
Other horses to look out for will be Freedom Fighter and Von Trotha, who are always ready to put up a great challenge on the track in the Nambred division.
The event will have a different feel without veteran jockey Concrete Bohitile and famous horse Leeuloop, who both died in a freak accident last year.
“We invite everyone to come in their numbers and enjoy some of the best events to be hosted this year.
“People will only be required to pay an entry fee of N$50 at the gate,” Murangi added.
