Unbeaten Dam arrives for nationals

1500m star looking fit
Berthold Karumendu is optimistic that his protégé David Dam will take the national athletics championships by storm given the form he is in at the moment as Namibia's top athletes take on each other for top places at the Independence Stadium this weekend.

Namibia’s top long-distance running prospect David Dam has arrived in Windhoek to compete in the national athletics event slated for the Independence Stadium this weekend.

Da,. who is based at Omaruru, is said to be in the form of his life given that he has been dominating the track at recent competitions.

The athlete from the marginalised San community is unbeaten in the 800m and 1500m events.

Erongo regional sport officer Berthold Karumendu, who also happens to be the man who discovered the young Dam's talent, says other athletes will have to be at their best to catch up with him.

“I must say that the other athletes competing against him will have to work really hard because Dam is on a different level.

"He has been looking great in training and one can say that I am confident in what he can deliver this weekend.

“He has all the characteristics of a potential global superstar and these nationals will just be another test for him,” Karumendu said.

Big events ahead

Karumendu added that the event will be important for Dam, as he has a tough assignment ahead in next week’s Grand Prix in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Karumendu expects the athlete to improve on his current times given the intensity and commitment in his training.

This year, Dam has already run a personal best of 1:52.2 in the 800m and a PB of 3:56.3 in the 1500m category.

“The upcoming races will determine so much as to how far we have come with this athlete.

“All I know is that Dam is showing great signs of promise and we all hope that he will live up to the expectations,” Karumendu said.
