Rossmund pays tribute to legend

STAFF REPORTER
A field of 80 golfers turned out to honour a legend, 96-year-old Graham Louw, at Rossmund Golf Club this weekend.

Graham has served the Rossmund community for many years, both on and off the golf course. Even at the ripe old age he has reached, he still joins the field every Saturday.

He was joined on Saturday for the celebration by his family and many old hands.

"We are all proud to have him as a member of our club," members noted on Saturday.

The day kicked off in beautiful weather with a shotgun start and the golfers spreading themselves around the course.

The clubhouse was buzzing in the afternoon with all the golfers returning tired and thirsty.

Winners

Before the prize-giving, Dougie Smith (ex-Rossing Uranium and a previous club captain) had a few words to say about Louw and his lifelong contributions.

"We wish Graham and his family all the very best and hope to see him on and around the course for a long time to come," he said.

The man himself also addressed the golfers with a few stories from the old days.

A local artist donated a painting of Graham on the 18th green, which was auctioned off.

Pine van Wyk brought in the winning bid, sponsoring lamb and goat.

The overall winners and champions of the day, winning a count-out on 46 points, were Michael Ludeke and Fritz Coetzee Jr. They became the first recipients of the new Graham Louw Invitational Golf Day floating trophy sponsored by The Pro Shop (Marco Swarts and his team).

The second position went to Warren Theron and Thomas Shitaleni on 46 points. Steven Johns and Douw van Wyk, both on 45 points, clinched third place.

With an array of donations and sponsorships, every player went home with a prize.

Clive Lawrence and his team of Billy Knight and Peter Bassingthwaighte were praised and thanked for the work that went into making the day such a huge success.
