Okapya tournament set for Christmas

Jesse Kauraisa
The fifth annual Okapya Soccer Tournament will take place at the Eleven Morning Stars Sport Field in Ondangwa from 21 to 24 December.

Two soccer competitions are taking place over the four days: a veteran soccer competition and a youth soccer (regular teams) tournament.

"In order to lower the crime rate and keep young people occupied over the holiday season, the competition seeks to bring players or youth together.

"Teams from throughout the nation can use it as a platform to scout players during this competition and bolster their squads," organiser Sandro Ithana said.

The competition is primarily being sponsored by Phillip Lukas of Okapya Liner Transport.

Big prizes

Helao Nafidi Legends are the current champions of the veteran soccer competition, while Windhoek's Omandindi FC are the current Okapya Annual Soccer Tournament youth champions.

"Any team may enter the young soccer competition; there are no restrictions," Ithana added.

The cost of registration is N$1 000 for teams.

First-place prizes are N$12 000, which includes 18 gold medals, a floating trophy and a soccer kit. Second-place prizes are N$6 000, which also includes a soccer kit, and third-place prizes are N$3 000, which includes 18 bronze medals.

The Veteran Soccer League is exclusively available to players 35 years of age and older. Before going onto the field, these players will be asked to submit their national ID.

Veteran soccer registration costs N$800.

First place will receive a N$5 000 prize, 18 gold medals, a floating trophy and a soccer outfit.

Second place will win N$3 000 plus 18 silver medals and a soccer kit, while third place will receive N$2 000 in addition to 18 bronze medals.

Something for everyone

Additional prizes include N$500 for the top goalscorer, N$500 for the player of the tournament, N$200 for each man of the match during the round of 16, two Predator energy drinks and a certificate.

"On Wednesday, 20 December, at 18:00, the draw will take place at the Ondangwa Airport Hotel.

"In addition to soccer competition sponsors, stalls are available for exhibition for N$500. Reservations for stalls have already opened, and availability is limited to first come, first served."

The event is sponsored by Okapya Liner Transport (main sponsor), Onamulunga Service Station, Predator Energy Drink, Ondangwa Airport Hotel, Shili Ambulance Service, Concho Consulting Services, Ndali Florist and Decor, Coca Cola, Atai Investment, Piyet Service, Top Score, FI Electrical and Construction, Hannes and Eve Group and Kashipu Investment CC.
