Ohangwena Governor’s Cup a success
The Ohangwena Governors Cup, which concluded on Sunday evening, saw Eenhana constituency win the floating trophy in the athletics category, while Engela and Okongo constituencies came second and third, respectively.
The cup was launched by Ohangwena regional governor Walde Ndevashiya and sports and youth minister Agnes Tjongarero on Friday at the Eenhana Sports Stadium. The competition was hosted in partnership with PstBet.
The event attracted 850 athletes from different sport codes, such as athletics, boxing, soccer and netball.
Winners
The Oshikunde constituency scooped the award for best men's football team, for which they received a floating trophy and gold medals, while Omundaungilo constituency took second place and Okongo constituency took third place.
In another win for the Eenhana constituency, the women's football team were declared the winners, for which they received a trophy and gold medals. Omulonga constituency took second place and received silver medals, while Okongo constituency took bronze medals for third place.
Ongenga constituency were declared the winners in the netball category, followed by Engela in second place and Oshikunde constituency in third. The three teams walked away with gold medals and a trophy for the first winner, silver for the second team, and bronze for the third team.
Concerns raised
During the launch of the cup, Ndevashiya took the opportunity to air his grievances to Tjongarero about the fact that the sports stadium in Eenhana has not yet been completed after 15 years.
"It has taken now over 15 years, if I have to be precise. When we started with the fundraising in 2007, I remember when we invited the then minister of youth and sport, John Mutorwa, and the current deputy prime minister for the fundraising, which was initiated by Eenhana town council. It was organised specifically to raise funds to facilitate and accelerate the development of a modern sports facility in Eenhana to serve the region. It is not yet completed," he said.
