The second edition of the African Kyokushin Karate Championship concluded in Windhoek on Sunday, with hosts Namibia dominating the competition by claiming a remarkable 36 gold medals across kumite and kata events in various age and weight categories.

Tunisia, who entered four competitors, followed in second place with six gold medals, while Zambia secured four, Angola took home three, Guinea earned two and South Africa claimed the remaining single gold medal of the tournament.

The continental showpiece, sanctioned by the Kyokushin World Union (KWU), was organised by the Namibia Kyokushin Karate Organisation (NKKO). The championship ran from Friday to Sunday at Crete Gymnastics Club’s venue in Maerua Mall, drawing athletes from ten visiting countries to test their strength, discipline and determination in pursuit of victory.

Namibian team instructor, Sensei Luke Yumo, expressed immense pride in his athletes. “I'm very proud of the performance of our athletes. They showed exceptional skill and discipline,” he said.

Yumo emphasised the team's continued commitment: “The KWU secretary-general, Shihan Aleksandr has already highlighted next year’s world championship, and we are ready. Team Namibia is coming, and we are coming to scoop more medals and trophies. Osu!”

Runners-up Tunisia’s head coach Shihan Ali Ghabbech expressed pride in the team’s performance and indicated that martial fighters are united in supporting a stronger Africa.

“I am so proud of my team. We had four competitors and won four gold medals in kumite, two gold medals in kata, one silver and one bronze. They competed very well, showing great technique and tactics, and they were very strict in their execution,” Ghabbech said.
