‘Mike Tyson-styled’ Shinima apologises to fans

MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing Promotions boxers have expressed aspirations for bigger challenges following a victorious night at Helao Nafidi in the Ohangwena Region on Saturday.

Charles Shinima retained his title after beating South Africa's Mziwoxolo Nwayana by second-round KO at a packed Helao Nafidi Expo Hall.

“I knew I would knock him out but I did not expect it to be this early in the rounds.

"It was very unfortunate for the people who came in their numbers that I could not go for a few rounds in order for them to enjoy the fight.

“I wanted to give a better performance to my opponent but I could not watch him very slow and that is why I just took him out,” Shinima said.

Shinima’s devastating punches to the South African's head sent him straight to the canvas, leaving Nwayana unconscious for a few minutes.

Paulinus ‘John John’ Ndjolonimus, on the other hand, had to withstand tough competition from Democratic Republic of Congo’s Erick Tshimanga.

The Namibian retained the WBO Africa super middleweight title after Tshimanga retired from the fight in the eighth round.

Ndjolonimus complained about his opponent’s height, which made things tricky for him.

“The fight was very different because the guy is very short and it made it tough for me to connect my punches.

“I however do not blame that on his height because he ended up withdrawing after feeling my power,” Ndjolonimus said.

Philipus 'Energy' Nghitumbwa, who neutralised his opponent as early as the first round, also hopes for bigger challenges after a victorious night.

The WBO Africa Global super bantamweight champion Nghitumbwa stopped Said Chino in the first round to retain the title.

“I will see what is next for me but I hope for bigger challenges in the future.

“I knew I was going to win this fight because he was appearing a bit shaky and I caught him as early as possible,” Nghitumbwa remarked.

In other fights, Paulus Amavila was victorious after Elson Kalus's team threw in the towel in the ninth round to claim the junior welterweight national title.

“I am happy for this victory because I waited for so long for my first national title.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported me during my career,” Amavila said.

Immanuel Mungadjela defended his national welterweight title after beating Bernard Bernard by unanimous decision.

Mungadjela hopes that he will be able to get a crack at a WBO title after defending his title a dozen times now.

“I hope that I will get a chance at a bigger title because I have been defending this title for a number of years now.

“I am however very happy that I managed to win this fight against an undefeated boxer as well,” Mungadjela said.

Other action and results

Sam Mathews was defeated by Immanuel Jason by on a split decision.

Lineekela Ngifindikaka lost Ambrosius Kemunini by split decision, while Lazarus Shangingwa beat Onesmus Nekundi by unanimous decision.

Nestor Thomas beat Antonio Moses by unanimous decision, while Joseph Hihangwa and Thomas Jerobeam’s fight ended in a draw.

In the first bout of the day, Frederick Nghutenanye beat Reinhold Matheus by unanimous decision.

Helao Nafidi town council mayor Darius Shaalukeni thanked MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing Promotions for bringing boxing to the people.

“I want to thank everyone that made this event possible and the promotions for bringing the event to this town.

“We are grateful as a town for having hosted such an event and we hope that there will be more such events for the development of sports in this town and surrounding towns as well,” Shaalukeni remarked.

Promoter Nestor Tobias lauded the people of Helao Nafidi and surroundings for coming in their numbers.

Tobias also heaped praises on sponsors MTC and Premier Sports Trading for making the fight night possible.

He expressed gratitude towards anyone that played a part in the successful hosting of the event.
