Beatrice Masilingi's return to track and field glory did not go according to plan on Wednesday, when she finished last in the women's 200m second semi-final due to a hamstring problem.
Beatrice Masilingi’s return to track and field glory isn’t going according to plan, with the Namibian sprint star suffering a hamstring injury Wednesday morning in the women's 200m second semi-final.
Masilingi's race began well in the fifth lane, but she started slowing down and ended up jogging slowly to the finish line, finishing last in a time of 24.78 seconds at the World Athletics Championships. The competition is taking place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States of America (USA).
The race was bagged by the USA’s Tamara Clark, who took first place in a time of 21.95 seconds. Dina Asher-Smith recorded a Seasons Best (SB), taking second place in a time of 21.96. Third place went to Jamaica’s sprint queen Ellaine Thompson Herah in 21.97 seconds, a SB as well.
Slow end
Masilingi said she started off well, but her hamstring started to bother her, so she decided to slow down. "I didn’t want to push any longer in case I damaged it again, so I just slowed down."
The Tokyo Olympic finalist's first-grade hamstring injury started around April this year, and she has been recovering in South Africa, where she has been seeing a sports specialist.
Asked by international media as to how she gets over these types of injuries, she explained that she tries to not frustrate herself.
"I will turn back to my medical team and we will take it from there. I have a strong support system. My friends and family back home have been great, as has my coach and medical team."
Masilingi’s representative, Newton Sports Agency’s Kirsten Van Heerden, said that they will share more information about the injury at a later stage.
The Namibian reached the next round of the 200m events after comfortably winning her heat.
