Looser wins in South Africa

Namibian cyclist Vera Looser performed exceptionally well at the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg Road 2022 on Sunday.

Looser won the women’s road bike race over 97 km against Tiffany Keep - a 22-year-old South African, and Kim le Court from Mauritius.

The finishing times for all three women were identical in the sprint finish, at 2 hours, 43 minutes, and 34 seconds.

The 29-year-old Looser finished in third place at the 947 Ride mountain bike ride the previous weekend, which was won by Kim Le Court with Candice Lill of South Africa second.

The Namibian champion has had one of her best seasons yet – including a fourth-place finish at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In an equally tough sprint to conclude the 947 Joburg men’s race, Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg just managed to beat Windhoek-born Marc Pritzen (second) and mountain bike specialist Gert Heyns (third).

The 23-year-old Pritzen was considered a favourite for the race, after he also won the Amashova Durban Classic and the Cape Town Cycle Tour this year – and nearly achieved a remarkable triple.

The male and female winners on Sunday each walked away with N$200 000.
