Windhoek braces for Vivo Marathon
Road running
The NTV production team will put together a highlights show to be broadcast next week.
Road running enthusiasts are up for a treat as the Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon takes centre stage in the capital on Saturday morning.
Vivo Energy’s corporate communications manager, Lazarus Nafidi, says all systems are in place and the inaugural event has received overwhelming entries.
The event which will start and finish at the Windhoek City Centre near Zoo Park will be hosted in conjunction with the City of Windhoek. The race distances are over 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and a 42 km full marathon.
“We have received more entries which makes it more exciting. I can assure you that security is in place and the traffic services will regulate the route.
“We have also made provision for those people that may not be able to complete the race due to any emergency events on the route,” Nafidi said.
The organisers are devoted to help the less fortunate community within the city. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the City of Windhoek Mayoral Fund which looks after the elderly and less fortunate residents.
“The 5km event will be a fun part for those that come to enjoy and relax on the route,” Nafidi added.
The City of Windhoek this week announced temporarily road closures to accommodate runners. Firstly, the left lane of Sam Nujoma Drive from the City of Windhoek head office up to Daan Viljoen road.
The intersection of Fidel Castro and Independence Avenue will be temporarily closed, as well as Independence Avenue between Daniel Munamava Street and Sam Nujoma Drive.
“Please drive safely in these areas and kindly follow the race marshals’ instructions. Be on the lookout for runners. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the City of Windhoek wrote in a public memo.
