WHS, Gymnasium pull away in second halves

Rugby
In the north, both Compack Tsumeb Gymnasium and OK Moria were celebrating.

The King Price Windhoek Gymnasium Lions beat Autohaus Windhoek Afrikaans Private School by ten points (23-13) at Affies Park on Saturday to take the maximum nine log points and maintain their top position in the Standard Bank U19 premier league.

The score was level at 13-all when the whistle blew for half-time. Affies' fullback, Carter Loubser, got the scoreboard going with two successful penalties.

Shortly before half-time, Loubser went over in the corner after an excellent move and converted his own try for 13-13.

A turning point was early in the second half when, after a penalty kicked out seven metres from Affies' goal line, the Lions scored a try from a lineout. The hosts tried their best, but the visitors' forwards played a big role in their victory.

Gymnasium outside centre Hanré Cocklin and scrum-half Janco Bredenhann each scored one try, while captain and nr. 8 Ruan Agenbag contributed two of the Lion's four tries. Flyhalf Waldré Kotze contributed one penalty.

All Affies' points came from fullback Carter Loubser. who scored one try and was successful with two penalties.

WHS Kudu Bulls win

At Vegkop Stadium, hosts Samsung Windhoek High School pulled away in the second half from a solid PSG Walvis Bay PS to win 56-18 (half-time 21-11), Andrew Poolman reports.

WHS captain and number 8 McHenry Kambatuka was probably the single biggest factor, scoring three tries with powerful runs and leg drives, beating numerous defenders. For his second, he caught a kick-off and beat four defenders in an almost straight sprint for the goal posts.

Lock Izaiah Kazandova, scrumhalf Dominic Isaaks, flyhalf Joshua Moller (from a lineout overthrough near the WBPS goalline) and wings Xavier Bampton and Ethan Sinden scored further tries for the WHS Kudu Bulls, with Moller (6) and centre Eljoh Strauss (1) getting full marks on their conversions.

Walvis Bay showed impressive power in the scrums and mauls, but on a windy morning were outclassed by WHS. Flank Valentino Simon and fullback Antua Klein scored tries, with Klein adding two penalties and a conversion.

Win for Tsumeb

Compack Tsumeb Gymnasium coach Wouter Niehaus gave credit to experienced referee Danie Koen’s controlled handling of the match against Elnatan Private School, who travelled 720 km from Stampriet.

“Danie’s clear and polite communication with the players, his fitness to always be close to the action were exemplary, while his allowance of advantage contributed to eleven tries being scored in the match,” Niehaus said.

Russel Bartlett (nr. 8), Pieter Potgieter (hooker), Charl Cilliers (scrumhalf), Walter Shikongo (wing), Juan Brits (prop), Jamie Viljoen (centre) scored tries in Tsumeb’s 43-24 win, along with a penalty try when a maul was collapsed. Grant Ras (wing) landed three conversions.

Elnatan’s four tries were scored by left wing Jano Kruger (2) and replacements Jorden Seibeb and Alex Thomsen, with centre JR Strydom converting two.

Elnatan coach Johan Adriaanse: “Tsumeb’s pack was dominanant, especially in the second half. Our hooker and captain Marnus Bothma played well and Tersuan Haack (fullback) is a name you’ll be hearing a lot about.”

Moria beat Pro-Ed

At Outjo, hosts OK Moria took the winning points (26-15) despite PSG Pro-Ed Academy scoring three tries against two.

Moria try scorers were Jano Erasmus (centre) and Connor Burmeister-Nel (flank), with centre Boeta Narib accurate with two conversions and four penalties. Moria players who stood out in a big team effort were prop William Pienaar, Burmeister-Nel and Ben Mostert (nr 8), scrumhalf Du Rand Louw and centres Narib and Erasmus.

The Outjo team is coached by Reino du Toit and TW Koorts, with Dakkie Anthonissen and Buck Louw as assistant coaches and team managers.

Pro-Ed captain and centre Tayton Saunders, nr. 8 Jivaldo Pienaar and prop Devon Burger scored tries.

Coach Thys Saunders: “As always it was not easy against a good team in Outjo. Once they get on the front foot, they create problems and I reckon they beat us up front. Pro-Ed needs improvement in our lineouts, while we also missed tackles and committed errors in vital field positions. We also landed no conversions, while Moria did not miss one. We were our own enemies, while Moria played well and deserved the win.”
