The Namibian Bowling Association’s annual National Champion of Champions singles competition was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Eros Bowling Club in the capital.

Schalk van Wyk and Henriette Partridge were the defending singles champions.

As last year’s Namibian men’s and women’s Champion of Champions, Van Wyk and Partridge had qualified to represent their country in Australia at the recently held World Champion of Champions tournament.

This world event’s inaugural edition was famously won by Namibia’s Douw Calitz in 2003 in Moama, New South Wales.

The competition was tight at the Namibian national tournament, as all the players brought their A game in the singles.

As the tournament concluded on Sunday, Waylon Wentzel was crowned this year’s men’s Champion of Champions as he accumulated 15 points. Kat Steenkamp (2023 Namibian singles champion) ended on 12 points, while Freddie Fouché was on nine. Another former Champion of Champions winner, Axel Krahenbuhl, and Steven Peake were on nine each.

Amanda Steenkamp also put on a show as she won the women’s Champion of Champions with 12 points. No other opponent reached more than six.

This year’s men’s and women’s champion will once again qualify to represent the country at the World Champion of Champions tournament in 2024. The country where it will be presented and the date are not yet confirmed.

New Zealand would have hosted the 2023 version in November, but because the World Bowls Championships was held in Australia, that date was brought forward and the event concluded just after the World Championships at the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The national Champion of Champions title could only be contested by Namibian citizens, but registered players from any club in the country could enter.

Players from clubs at the coast, the North and especially Windhoek faced each other with total focus and dedication on the immaculate greens.

Eros Bowling Club, TransNamib and Windhoek Bowling Club dominate the competition as far as the number of entries were concerned.

The decisive final round was completed on Sunday.

The tournament was broadcast live by Namibia Media Holdings’ NTV production team and is available on YouTube for viewers that would like to see how it all unfolded.
