Tri-nations showdown with RSA, Angola

The Namibian Wrestling Association (NWF) will host the country’s first-ever International Open Club Championships in the big hall at Windhoek High School today.

Teams from neighbouring countries South Africa, one of the continent’s most developed competitors in the sport, and Angola are also in the capital this week.

Since Wednesday, the NWF hosted a two-day training camp which created an unique opportunity for athletes and coaches with practical coaching sessions in both wrestling styles. Coaches experienced and gained valuable new techniques, while wrestlers learnt from world-class coaches.

Luis Forcelledo (Namibian national coach, of Cuban descent) shared his expertise with the athletes, along with retired ex-Springbok coach Gertjie van der Merwe and Charl van der Merwe (Springbok wrestler) who are now the coaches at Windhoek Wrestling Club.

Both Greco-Roman (only grips to the upper body allowed) and freestyle are included in the competition, according to age and weight categories.

Ester Abraham from Namibia, who recently won a bronze medal at the African Beach Wrestling Championship in Dakar, Senegal, will also be in action.

The NWF extends a special word of thanks to Windhoek High School for hosting the wrestling event.

The competition starts this morning at 09:00, after the medical examination, weigh-in and draw from 07:30 to 08:30 and the opening ceremony. Session one is from 09:00 to 13:00 before session two continues from 14:00 until 17:00. The medal ceremony is scheduled between 17:00 and 17:30.

The competition will be broadcast live by NTV (on DStv channel 285 and GOtv channel 25), as well as on https://oneuptwo.com/ntv.

Exciting wrestling action is guaranteed and admission is free. The NWF invites people to come to watch the wrestlers.

It is well known that wrestling counts among the most beneficial sports for physical development of especially young children.
