As expected, FNB Kudus first team emerged victorious against FNB Grootfontein by 52-31 at the Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay on Saturday.

With title holders FNB Wanderers enjoying a bye weekend, the result has taken Kudus into the current lead posisition by a single log point.

Grootfontein took a 5-0 lead in the fifth minute and continued applying pressure, but Kudus had other plans and managed to hit back to a 7-5 lead. The Walvis Bay outfit continued launching well-orchestrated attacks and cemented its lead to 19-5 before the half-time whistle.

During the second half, both teams came out launching concerted efforts in an entertaining, high-scoring affair.

Grootfontein struggled to break through Kudus stubborn defence in the first half, but had some more success in the second half, trimming Kudus’ impressive winning margin somewhat to 52-31.

Kudus scored eight tries and converted six. Lock Tersius Arangies, flanker William Lottering, number eight Alexander Jansen, fly-half Geraldo Beukes, right-wing Williams, replacement Lloyd Jacobs. Outside centre Justin Newman scored two tries. Beukes and inside centre Aurelio Plato each scored three conversions.

Grootfontein scored five tries and converted two. Amutenya Amutenya scored a rare hat-trick off the bench, while flanker James Hinga and left lock Rheinhardt Carelse each scored once. Fly-half Sergio Dinniz landed two conversions.

Kudus loose forward Alexander Jansen said it was a good game. “Grootfontein scored a try in the fifth minute of the game which served as a wakeup call for us. I think that the boys went a bit of structure in this game but I’m glad that we could take the win today. I want to thank God and all the players because, without them, nothing would be possible,”

Reserve league

Kudus II defeated Grootfontein by 12-7 in their NRU reserve league match. Kudus fly-half Scott Winsborn and replacement Ernesto Bampton each scored one try. Winborn added one conversion.

Grootfontein’s flanker Deon Pienaar scored one try which was converted by fly-half Peet Harmse.
