A weekend of schools hockey
Schools hockey league matches took place at the Windhoek Gymnasium and WHS courts this weekend.
Rivals Windhoek High School (WHS) and Windhoek Gymnasium resumed the schools’ hockey league at the WHS Trustco Davin hockey Astro on Saturday.
Windhoek Gymnasium second boys team were leading 1-0 after the first 30 minutes with 1-0 against WHS fourth team and added two more in the second half to emerge as 3-0 winners.
The tight game between the two schools saw Windhoek Gymnasium defending well and dominating possession of the ball. Windhoek High School defended well in the first half well kept the ball in their possession half of the time.
The healthy sporting spirit between the two schools remained evident throughout the games.
Gys Cilliers, coach of Windhoek Gymnasium, said every match brings its own challenges, and determining the strategy ahead of time can be a challenge.
“All games are a bit difficult and you don’t always know what your strategy should be going into the game. Ours are to keep the ball in possession and to move into space.”
Accurate finishing to round off their promising moves into the goal circle are among their challenges, Cilliers added.
Mario Pedro, a Windhoek Gymnasium player, said according to him the team played really well. “Our team build-up was really good.”
Pedro said the team recruited some players from outside Gymnasium, who tapped in well with the overall energy and contribute to the team.
Other matches of the day included the girls’ first league, where Windhoek Afrikaans Private School 1-4 lost against St. Pauls’ College.
The WAP second boys’ team drew against the WHS team with 1-1 from each side. The boys’ first league saw WHS win 2-1 against St. Pauls.
The hockey schools league started in early June and will end with the finals on 2 September.
