Altogether, 92 pedestrians were killed in accidents involving cars between January 1 and September 30 this year, and 696 pedestrians were injured. National police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said last week that Oshana recorded the highest number of pedestrian fatalities, with 15, while both the Ohangwena and Kavango East regions reported 12 deaths each. Eleven fatalities were reported in Oshikoto, while all other regions reported fewer than 10 pedestrian deaths.

The highest number of injuries, 313, were reported in the Khomas Region, while the Erongo Region recorded 84 injuries and Oshana reported 66 injuries."

The police attributed an increase in the use of cell phones as a possible contributing factor to pedestrian accidents involving cars as well as speeding vehicles.
