The 92nd session of the Interpol General Assembly concluded yesterday in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

The assembly, attended by police chiefs from 178 of Interpol's 196 member states, focused on key global law enforcement priorities and concluded with the election of new members to the Interpol executive committee.

One of the most closely watched contests was the election for the position of Interpol vice-president for Africa, a role for which Namibian Police Major-General Anne-Marie Nainda, the current Interpol delegate for Africa, campaigned for.

Nainda faced stiff competition from Morocco and Benin in what turned out to be a tightly contested race. Despite a strong campaign, Namibia did not secure enough votes to win the election, with Morocco emerging victorious.

Namibia received 24.4% of the votes (40), Morocco 58.5%, and Benin 17.1%.

"We would like to thank all the member states who supported Major-General Nainda and placed their trust in her leadership," a statement by the Namibian Police read.

Nainda remains a delegate for Africa within the Interpol executive committee.
