Kutako shrine inauguration delayed amid outcry
NEWS IN SHORT
The presidency has postponed the controversial inauguration of the Chief Hosea Kutako Memorial Museum and Shrine, initially scheduled for this Friday, citing President Nangolo Mbumba’s plan to attend the inauguration of Botswana's new president Duma Boko the same day.
The Kutako shrine has sparked controversy amid accusations that government has excluded descendants of the late revered chief, who died in 1970.
Namibian Sun understands that supporters of Professor Mutjinde Katjiua, of the claimants to the Ovaherero paramount chief title, were planning a sit-in protest at the shrine this weekend.
The presidency only cited the Botswana trip as the reason for postponement.
“President Nangolo Mbumba has accepted an invitation to attend the inauguration ceremony in Gaborone, Botswana, highlighting the strong bonds of cooperation between our two nations,” a statement said.
