Swapo veterans blast party’s Johnny-come-latelies
Swapo veterans have come together to save the party from self-destruction, saying new members do not understand its ethos and are thus incapable of defending it.
This according to the spokesperson of the Former PLAN Combatants Association, Dr Charles Mubita, who says party veterans will no longer sit back and watch Swapo's support wane.
He said many people have joined the party for personal benefits, and have been trampling on Swapo’s constitution and structures in order to achieve their parochial goals.
“There are new members with a new mindset who have been tarnishing the name of the party. We have decided we cannot sit idle, otherwise the party could die,” he said on The Evening Review on Tuesday.
“We cannot afford that. That’s why we convened as former PLAN [People’s Liberation Army of Namibia] fighters to say we now have an obligation to defend the revolution, nobody else."
They don’t understand
Newcomers to the party do not understand why there is an obligation to defend the party from attacks, according to Mubita.
“Some of the people who just joined the party do not understand that there is an obligation to defend that revolution, because they did not see the blood, the sacrifices,” he said.
Mubita cited technocrats in government and even at public entities who were running the country into the ground because they ‘did not understand’ the party’s manifesto.
“We saw the type of permanent secretaries that we had, the type of directors, the CEOs that we had... The majority of those people were running down the country, and were not at all concerned about the manifesto,” he said.
Pretending
Those entrusted to run the country are merely pretending to love Swapo, Mubita added.
“You find that the party’s plans to bring economic development could not be moved faster by people at government who pretended to be - and there are still some who pretend to be - super Swapos because they just want a job.”
The former combatants convened in Ongwediva last weekend to engage on how they can ensure that Swapo regains its two-thirds majority in the upcoming national elections.
The group vowed to defend the former liberation movement and restore it to its former glory.
