PDM ‘original 6’ join National Assembly
Six politicians of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) were sworn in as members of parliament in the National Assembly yesterday, following a recent Supreme Court ruling.
They are Hidipo Hamata, Charmaine Tjirare, Yvette Araes, Maximalliant Katjimune, Reggie Diergaardt and Mike Venaani, father of party president McHenry Venaani.
The Supreme Court last week declared that Esmeralda Esme !Aebes, Johannes Martin, Kazeongere Zeripi Tjeundo, Godfrey Kupuzo Mwilima, Timotheus Sydney Shihumbu and Pieter Mostert must leave the National Assembly because they were there unlawfully.
This was after PDM amended its party list of MPs and deserted the gazetted list after the 2019 election, in which it won 16 seats. Hamata, Tjirare and Diergaardt dragged the party to court, challenging their names’ removal from the parliamentary list and questioning why they were replaced with those who were not on the list submitted to the Electoral Commission of Namibia.
