Over 500 000 voters registered, 1.2 million to go
Between 3 and 22 June, a total of 536 202 eligible Namibians registered to vote.
This according to a statement issued yesterday by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), which said this figure accounts for both voters registered within the country and at Namibian diplomatic missions abroad. The total translates to a daily average of 28 211 new registrations from 17 to 22 June.
The Khomas Region led the registration figures with 109 058 new voters, followed by Ohangwena with 56 524 and Omusati with 52 142.
The Erongo Region recorded 50 090 potential voters, while Oshana and Oshikoto registered 46 315 and 39 088 respectively. The region that recorded the lowest number of voter registrations so far is Zambezi, with 16 209.
Additionally, 918 Namibians registered outside the country.
Challenges
The ECN urged all eligible Namibian citizens who have not yet registered to do so promptly to ensure their participation in the upcoming national elections.
"The nation is hereby informed that the general registration of voters (GRV) continues across the country and at all Namibian diplomatic missions abroad, from Monday to Saturday. The commission is therefore reminding and urging all eligible Namibian citizens who have not yet registered to do so as soon as possible." The GRV began on 3 June and will run until 1 August.
The new registration figure follows a slow start reported a week ago, with some diplomatic missions reporting challenges, including the long distances some people have to travel in order to register there.
Another challenge is that people do not know where in their constituencies to register, or that they report to venues where the ECN teams are not yet present.
The commission also recently urged voters wishing to register for regional and local authority elections to provide the correct documents.
