Nujoma turns 95 as death rumour is dispelled

STAFF REPORTER
President Nangolo Mbumba yesterday led tributes for founding president Sam Nujoma’s 95th birthday, a day after his personal physician dispelled rumours that the elderly statesman had died.

Speaking to NBC on Saturday, Dr Tshali Iithete said Nujoma was hospitalised last week but has since been discharged.

Dr Iithete has called on members of the public to desist from spreading false rumours, saying they're damaging to the presidential family and the entire nation at large.

"I just wish to clarify that founding president Dr Sam Nujoma is at home at his residence in Windhoek. He was hospitalised about a week ago and is recuperating well at home. I wanted to clarify to the viewers and listeners the state of his health and that he is recuperating well at home,” Iithete told the national broadcaster.

Awe and admiration

In his message, Mbumba said: “Indeed, celebrating 95 years of the life of the icon we know as Comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma is a moment that resonates far and wide across our country and beyond its borders. As Namibians, we gather as one to serenade Comrade Nujoma, an indomitable lion and Pan-African luminary who has established a legacy of leadership, which will stand the test of time.”

The ruling Swapo Party, which Nujoma led as president for 47 years, also paid its tribute, saying: “Your vision has embedded in our society the genesis of social cohesion and national reconciliation, to which posterity will look back with awe and admiration.

“From your exemplary leadership, marked by uprightness and commitment to the cause of justice for all, we have come to learn the virtues of forgiveness, reconciliation and tolerance.”

A revered freedom fighter, Nujoma was born on May 12, 1929 at Etunda village in Ongandjera. He led the former liberation movement from 1960 to 2007, leading the country to its independence in 1990. He served as president for 15 years, from 1990 to 2005.
