Contributions in Swapo are meaningless – Nawatiseb

Ogone Tlhage
Former information deputy minister Engel Nawatiseb says his decision to switch his political allegiance from the ruling Swapo Party to the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) is due to the fact that contributions made by Swapo party members are ‘meaningless’.

The move is “painful but necessary”, he added.

Nawatiseb recently joined the orange army after extensively consulting his wife and immediate family, saying he could not serve in a party where his contributions meant nothing.

Speaking to Namibian Sun yesterday in a telephonic interview, he said it was the natural next step.

“So many people are inquisitive about why I made this move. I am unhappy, but I had to move on,” he said.

Good relations

When asked how the move to LPM has affected his ties with his former Swapo comrades, Nawatiseb said he has maintained good relations with his political peers.

“At the local level, we are 100%, but those who feel betrayed, it is up to them to isolate themselves. Locally in Tsumeb, we are all homeboys; it is only the shifting of goalposts.”

Nawatiseb, who enjoyed a stint as a journalist at one stage, served as Swapo treasurer in the Oshikoto Region before moving up the ranks to become Tsumeb mayor. He also served as a member of parliament between 2015 and 2020, a period which coincided with stints in government when he was public enterprises deputy minister between 2015 and 2018, and then deputy minister of information between 2018 and 2020.
