Weekend marred by suicide
A 20-year-old University of Namibia (Unam) student died by suicide on Friday, kicking off a weekend tragically marred by several deaths.
Kondyeni Abraham’s body was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room at Unam’s main campus.
According to the police, Abraham - who was a computer science student - didn’t show up for exams on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting concerned classmates to go looking for him. No suicide note was found.
Another student, Oscar Kaziwapo Iipinge (23), died by suicide on Friday just outside Mariental.
His body was discovered hanging from a tree by a passer-by, who alerted the police.
According to the police, he was a fourth-year nursing student at Welwitchia University, who allegedly returned home from Windhoek on Wednesday and told a friend he would hitchhike back on the same day. No suicide note was found.
Car crash leads to suicide
Also on Friday, 23-year-old Tomas Nantinda died by suicide after crashing a colleague’s car.
His body was found hanging from a traffic sign after he reportedly wrecked his colleague’s car en route from Rosh Pinah to Oranjemund.
According to the Namibian Police, he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. After the crash, he walked about 800 metres before taking his own life.
GBV turns deadly
At Farm Rooi Krans in the //Karas Region, Tangeni Elias (28) died by suicide after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and their child.
His body was found hanging from a tree near their homestead on Saturday. Police said Elias had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and tried to strangle their child to death on Thursday before neighbours intervened. No foul play was detected in his suicide.
In the Musese constituency of the Kavango West Region, Kafuna Matheus Namwira took his own life after a misunderstanding with his family.
His body was found hanging from a tree.
Meanwhile, in unrelated news, Michael Rooi (26) died after complaining of feeling unwell. The incident took place in Karas’ Berseba constituency.
According to the police, his cause of death has yet to be determined as he had allegedly been bitten by an unknown animal and was admitted to hospital for treatment earlier this month.
