N$42 million police station inaugurated
Staff quarters a priority
Police officers deployed to the new police station in Endola have been urged to maintain the facilities for future generations.
Safety and security minister Albert Kawana has emphasised the importance of providing proper accommodation for police officers to ensure they execute their duties effectively.
Kawana was speaking at the official inauguration of a new police station in Endola, Ohangwena Region, on Friday. The station was constructed at a cost of N$42.6 million, which included the procurement of vehicles.
Kawana said it has become standard procedure to include barracks for police officers whenever police stations are built.
“Adequate accommodation of our men and women in uniform has become topical. The police deserve proper accommodation. The station will also be equipped with two vehicles for members to effectively respond to the community’s complaints,” Kawana said.
The police station consists of a charge office, a radio room, a server room, an armoury/record room, a police cell block with three cells, and a doctor’s consulting room. The police barracks comprise two two-bedroom semi-detached units and two blocks of fourteen rooms – eight for men and six for women.
Maintain
The minister urged police officers "to jealously safeguard" the new station and barracks against vandalism to ensure that they are preserved for future generations.
Kawana said that having a police station in the area will undoubtedly ensure that the officers execute their mandate by bringing services closer to the people.
He added that it is pivotal for the police to continue to optimally utilise and deploy the necessary resources where they will have a meaningful impact in line with their constitutional obligations.
Establish networks
He encouraged police officers deployed at the station to establish “good networks and relations” within the community they will serve.
“Criminals are not alien species, they are part and parcel of the community. For this reason, the community is urged to work with the police. It is for this reason that a decision has been taken that whenever we recruit police trainees, we also recruit community members from all 14 regions who are members of the men and women network against crime and who meet the minimum requirements,” Kawana said.
