The police in the Kavango East Region are investigating the death of a 41-year-old teacher whose lifeless body was discovered by colleagues on school premises on Monday afternoon.

According to a preliminary police report, the deceased - identified as Rachael Masela Sindano - collapsed at around 14:38 that afternoon at Friendly Private School in Rundu where she teaches pre-schoolers.

She was declared dead on the scene.

Since her body was found by a tap, it is suspected that she was on her way to fetch water.

Namibian Sun was informed that no one saw the victim when she collapsed.

This publication uncovered that the deceased remained at school on that fateful day because she was studying for an examination that took place yesterday.

She was studying towards a qualification in early childhood development through the Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol).

Shocked

Narrating what transpired on that day, Sindano’s colleague told Namibian Sun that there were no signs that she was not feeling well.

“She was joyous like she always has been and for someone to suspect that she was not doing well, it was impossible, hence we are all shocked about what happened.”

According to the source, the hospital was contacted as soon as Sindano’s body was discovered, but it took more than 30 minutes for someone to arrive.

“At first, only a bakkie with paramedics arrived and upon realising the situation had worsened, the bakkie returned to the hospital and a few minutes later an ambulance arrived to collect the body,” the colleague said.

School was suspended yesterday and it is likely that classes will be suspended today too.

By 10:00 yesterday when Namibian Sun visited the school, teachers were awaiting the police for their statements to be taken.

Post-mortem delay

A post-mortem into what caused Sindano’s death will only be conducted tomorrow.

This according to Kavango East police crime coordinator, deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, who ascribed the delay to the workload being experienced at the hospital.

He added that preliminary police investigations point to a natural death, but said the post-mortem will give a definite cause of death.

Many have described the late teacher as full of joy.

She was loved by many and some tributes - seen by Namibian Sun - described her as someone parents were able to rely on.

Sindano had been teaching pre-schoolers at Friendly Private School for the past eight years.
