Man dies after entire family falls ill
The death of a 30-year-old man and the hospitalisation of a family of six on Sunday in Walvis Bay have sent shockwaves through the community.
The head of the community policing sub-division in the Erongo Region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident, saying that it happened around 07:00 on Fisant Street in the Otweya settlement.
According to Shapumba, it was alleged that the family of seven prepared dinner (porridge and Oshikandela milk) as well as already-cooked pieces of chicken bought from a local supermarket on Saturday.
"After eating and following an evening prayer as they usually do, they all went to sleep. It was further alleged that at around 2:00, the wife went to the bathroom because she had stomach pain. She eventually got weak and could not move. She called for help; however, neither her husband nor the children responded," the police said.
"She sat in the bathroom until 07:00 on Sunday morning. When she gained strength, she walked with the support of the wall to the bedroom, where she noticed that everyone else in the house was unconscious. She called for help, and a neighbour notified the police."
The family was attended to by medics, who discovered that the husband was unresponsive. The deceased was identified as Alfeus Amadhila. The next of kin were informed.
Other family members, including the wife, were treated and admitted to Walvis Bay State Hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
A postmortem to determine the cause of death will be conducted.
