JUST IN: Drowning victim’s body found

Nikanor Nangolo
The police in the Kavango West Region recovered the body of Mathias Mungeli (24) this morning, who drowned on Wednesday in the river near Siyena Village.

Police Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga said the body was discovered at the river near Ngone village, about 12 km from Siyena village, where Mungeli fell into the water.

“The deceased was reportedly in the company of his mother, Emelinde Mudi Kambinda, at the time of the incident. According to the mother, the deceased had just finished preparing a canoe to cross the river with her when he suddenly slipped and fell into the water. He allegedly screamed for help three times and then disappeared [from view],” Muronga said.

The deceased was positively identified by the family members.

The police appealed to the community "to avoid using the river at the moment as it remains full to capacity, especially at [night]."
