‘Intoxicated’ mother can’t find daughter — three weeks later
A Gobabis mother, who allegedly lost her four-year-old daughter while she was under the influence of alcohol, has been unable to recall where she left her child, who has been missing for three weeks now.
Maliana Geingos, who speaks Khoekhoegowab, was last seen at the town on 28 May. She was only officially reported missing to the police a week later, according to Chief Inspector Fina Sakajengenga.
According to Sakajengenga, Maliana was seen by a security guard at the state hospital when she left the premises with her mother and walked towards the townships. Maliana and her mother, who was apparently heavily under the influence, were reportedly given a lift the night before, and the woman fell off the vehicle. She was taken to hospital with her daughter.
"The police found her [the mother] another time on the road where she was walking to the post office. They took her to the police cells where she slept until the next day. When she was asked the next morning where her little girl was, she said she had no idea," Sakajengenga said.
The police have also enlisted the help of a psychologist to talk to the woman to gain more information, but this yielded nothing, she said.
"There is still no sign of her [Maliana] or any information. We have searched everywhere, but we will not stop." Sakajengenga can be reached at 081 339 5386 if anyone knows more about Maliana’s disappearance.
Three years and counting
Meanwhile, Spencer Mandela Nakale, who mysteriously disappeared in Lüderitz in December 2020 at the age of three, has still not been found. His mother, Julia Ndafyaalako, enlisted the talents of a local artist to help the search. Artist Qonja Elias Salatiel's sketch of what the missing boy could look like now, at the age of seven, has been added to missing posters.
Nakale disappeared on 23 December 2020 from his aunt's house in Lüderitz’s Area 7, where he had spent the night. The last time he was seen was when he went outside to play with other children. Any information about his disappearance can be relayed via WhatsApp at 081 695 4974.
Deputy commissioner Nikodemus Mbango, the police's coordinator for crime investigations in the //Karas Region, confirmed that there are no new leads about the boy’s disappearance, but the investigation continues.
