Erongo ramps up road safety measures for festive season
With road accidents continuing to take a toll, the Erongo police emphasise that too many road users still fail to comply with basic road safety rules and regulations.
The Erongo Region recorded 98 car crashes, 226 injuries and 13 fatalities in 2023, with a similar trend continuing this year, with 91 crashes, 227 injuries and 11 fatalities reported by 10 December.
This is according to Erongo Police Commander, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, who spoke at the official launch of the 2024-2025 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign on Wednesday.
Kupembona emphasised the need for vigilance and collaboration to ensure safer roads during the holiday season after revealing the concerning road accident statistics for the region.
“These figures are a clear indication that many road users are still not complying with road safety regulations,” Kupembona said.
Safety plans
He emphasised the police's commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance road safety awareness and reduce traffic violations.
The campaign, which began on 15 November and will run until 17 January, focuses on critical areas such as vehicle load limits, executing warrants of arrest, motor vehicle roadworthiness inspections, increased law enforcement visibility on national roads, compliance checks, speed monitoring, random breathalyser tests, and other strategies.
Kupembona detailed the deployment of traffic law enforcement officers along the B2 national road and other strategic locations, including the Swakopmund checkpoint, Yianni Savva checkpoint, Arandis and Karibib, while mobile roadblocks will also be dispatched to secondary roads.
“The primary objective of the festive season initiative is to protect lives, safeguard property, reduce road traffic crashes and related violations,” he said.
Kupembona acknowledged the vital role of key stakeholders, including the National Road Safety Council, MVA Fund, local authorities and the works and transport ministry, in promoting road safety.
Their involvement, he said, is crucial to the success of the campaign.
In addition, he urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety of road users during the festive season. “Let us do the right thing and save lives,” he said.
