Early Christmas gift as 133 Oshana police officers promoted
Hard work rewarded
Oshana police chief Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria said the promotions signify efforts to strengthen law enforcement in the region.
Oshana police regional commander Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria promoted 133 officers from junior to senior ranks on Monday.
Sakaria, who has consistently promoted junior officers since taking office, said this forms part of his efforts to recognise the hard work of those in uniform.
Speaking during the promotion ceremony at the Oshakati Police headquarters, he emphasised that promotions will no longer be based solely on meeting requirements but will instead focus on merit to ensure effective policing.
The promoted officers, ranging from constables to warrant officers, are all advancing to new ranks.
Sakaria said the promotions will strengthen the force's capacity to address evolving security challenges and enhance public safety.
“We are monitoring and evaluating individuals' work before considering them for promotion. We want people who are committed to serving the Namibian people at all times,” he said.
Deserving officers
He told the promoted officers that a promotion is not merely an elevation in rank but a call to strive for excellence and take on greater responsibilities.
Sakaria pointed out that the Oshana Region has supported many promotions for deserving members.
Last year alone, over 700 officers were promoted in the region, a record by any standard, he said.
“I have been in the force for 29 years, and I have never seen such a large number of promotions. In this financial year, we have already promoted over 100 police officers,” he said.
Sakaria explained that the decision to promote a high number of serving officers was made by Namibian Police Inspector-General Joseph Shikongo and that none of the promoted members had any pending cases that would disqualify them from the process.
Early Christmas gift
Police Inspector Beverley Nawases, who was promoted to the rank of senior inspector, expressed her gratitude for the recognition of her hard work.
Nawases, a member of the Oshana Community Policing Sub-division, described her promotion as unexpected and thanked Shikongo for what she called an early Christmas gift.
Speaking to Namibian Sun shortly after her promotion, Nawases cautioned drivers to have their vehicles properly checked before travelling and to ensure their homes are secured when they are away.
“Speak to your neighbourhood watch or let your neighbour know that you are travelling so that they are aware as to who is not around. The festive season has a high number of crimes, especially cyber crimes. Do not share sensitive information with strangers who call claiming to be from institutions such as the banks,” she advised.
