Zookeeper by day, musician by night
Amidst the tranquil setting of Mariental's River Chalets, Musimba 'Moses' Paulus tends to a different kind of harmony.
From nurturing the residents of the Padlangs Padstal Mini Zoo by day to crafting melodies under the starlit sky by night, Paulus' journey is a testament to the enduring power of passion and perseverance.
Born and bred in Rundu, Paulus' connection with animals was forged in the rugged beauty of his surroundings. Recounting tales of accompanying his grandfather, a shepherd, along the Okavango River, Paulus said: "Those moments shaped my love for animals. It's like music to my soul."
Yet, as he grew older, his interests expanded beyond the realm of nature, leading him to explore the world of music. "Music gives me joy, especially making it and expressing myself," Paulus said.
However, life in Rundu posed its share of challenges, prompting his family to seek greener pastures in the south. Despite his efforts to find employment and pursue his musical ambitions in his hometown, Paulus found himself at a crossroads. "It was a tough time, but I refused to give up on my dreams," he reflected, his voice tinged with determination.
Unexpected path
In 2018, Paulus made the life-altering decision to join his family in Mariental. Little did he know that this move would lead him back to his childhood passion in the most unexpected of ways. Drawn to the opportunity to work at the Padstal Mini Zoo, Paulus embraced his role as a zookeeper with gusto. "Taking care of these animals feels like second nature to me," he said, his smile infectious as he tended to the needs of his furry and feathered friends.
Yet, even as he tends to the residents of the zoo with unwavering dedication, Paulus' love for music remains undimmed. “When I am not working with the animals, I like to spend my time listening to music and writing songs, as well as experimenting with beats.”
