NGO applauded for kindergarten upgrade

Jemimah Ndebele
NGO Footsteps for Africa has once again shown their commitment to community development by handing over a fully renovated kindergarten and daycare facility to Foundation Care, a non-profit organisation located on Mika Shimbuli Street in Windhoek's Shandumbala suburb.

The event took place on Saturday and marked a significant step forward in providing a safe and nurturing environment for underprivileged children in the area.

The newly-renovated kindergarten, upgraded at a cost of over N$160 000, is a testament to the dedication of Footsteps for Africa to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Effective donation

Moreover, the NGO extended their support beyond the renovation itself, generously donating educational supplies and a refurbished playground to further enrich the children's learning experience.

"Thanks to the generous donation of N$1.8 million made by Alan and Tiara Salzman through Footsteps for Africa, the identified challenges faced by Foundation Care were successfully addressed during the renovation process," explained Footsteps for Africa Nambia country director Jordaania Andima.

The donation covered the costs of several projects, including fixing the doors, providing beds and blankets for the children to sleep on, and acquiring necessary supplies such as books, crayons, educational posters, chalkboards, and twenty seats along with ten tables to facilitate effective learning.

Beacon of hope

Foundation Care, under the devoted leadership of Sylvia Taapopi, has been a beacon of hope for over three decades, providing a home and care for more than 200 vulnerable children.

Having observed the plight of young children left without supervision in the streets while their parents went to work, Taapopi took the initiative to establish a kindergarten 32 years ago.

This has allowed the children to play in a safe environment while receiving not only a basic education but also extracurricular activities like storytelling, singing, and playtime.

Additionally, the kindergarten offers remedial English and math instruction to ensure that the children receive a well-rounded education.
