New season for Shalldou

Elizabeth Kheibes
Joanie Daries, the mother of a young man who was left disabled after a brutal attack in 2022, has thanked the Good Samaritans who continue to come to their aid.

Now 23 years old, Shalldou Daries was allegedly attacked and locked in a room by his former childhood friends.

The suspects – Llewellyn Olivier and Alistair Steenkamp – are out on bail of N$3 000 each. The pair stand accused of attempted murder and kidnapping and appeared before the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court last month. Their case was postponed to 16 July.

Burden lessened

Since the attack, Joanie has had to carry the financial and emotional burden of caring for Shalldou alone.

However, this week, she said that since Namibian Sun reported on their story on 1 February, several people have contacted her to offer assistance.

"We have been so overwhelmed by the amount of support and calls we've received since the story about my son was told. I feel like a big emotional burden has been lifted from my shoulders, making me more present and grateful. I now have the confidence and strength to share my testimony with others all over Namibia," she said.

She added that she has started a brand, 'Ystervrou' [Woman of Steel], to raise money for her son’s medical expenses.

"This is a new season for my family. I will be selling shirts for N$200 and mugs for N$150. The proceeds will help us with access to medical care and medication for my son and will also make it possible for us to sustain the life we live now," Joanie said.
