New association to strengthen Malaysia-Namibia relations

In an effort to enhance bilateral relations between Malaysia and Namibia, the High Commission of Malaysia inaugurated the Namibian-Malaysia Friendship Association in Windhoek earlier this week.

The association will provide a platform for individuals who previously benefitted from studies, training and working in Malaysia to come together and better address any issues that can assist in enhancing and expanding relations between the two countries.

The association’s first inductees are Dr Armas Shikongo as president, with Amutenya Desiderius as vice-president. The acting high commissioner of Malaysia, Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, will serve as advisor, while Professor David Namwandi is serving as the first patron. Dr Drussila Mbauka Uandara was appointed as secretary and Trevor du Toit as treasurer.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rameez said the association aims to enhance diplomacy, trade and investment between Namibia and Malaysia.

"We can also do collaboration and cooperation in the education aspect.”

Shikongo said: “I am so happy and excited that we see [what was merely an idea] come to fruition. I hope this will give birth to more substantive ideas, projects, cooperation and building friendship.”
