Knit-a-bit sets goal to create 100 blankets for a good cause

The needles will be clicking away next weekend to knit and crochet blankets for various community institutions, such as retirement homes and schools.

Organiser Alida Siebert, believes the Knit-a-bit event, which will be held in the capital, has a dual purpose.

"Through this, we are also building a community of people who knit and crochet," she said.

The group will gather at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Hotel School from 8:00 in the morning until 15:00 in the afternoon with the goal of knitting 100 blankets. One blanket consists of 35 blocks, each measuring 20 cm by 20 cm.

Learn a new craft

Those who still have to learn to create something wonderful with wool are also invited to join the initiative.

"We are willing to teach people," Siebert said, explaining that volunteers simply need to bring double-knit wool and a size four crochet hook or knitting needles to join the group.

Creative release

Siebert jokes, however, that those who want to take up knitting or crocheting should be aware: "It can become an addiction."

She noted that studies have shown that this hobby helps with stress and hypertension.

"I think it's because you feel immediate gratification when you knit or crochet – if you’ve stitched a row, you can immediately see the row, and when you’ve finished a block, you can see it," she said.

Siebert explained that she got the idea to hold a Knit-a-bit event in Namibia after seeing similar events held in South Africa. She added that Namibians from all corners of the country have pitched in and have already started sending blocks for the blankets.
