Gobabis residents clean up their town
The Gobabis community participated in a clean-up campaign last Friday to give the town a fresh look ahead of the holidays.
The campaign was initiated by Marie Beukes, who said the primary goal was to pick up litter and encourage every resident and business in the town to clean their own premises.
"Everyone always complains that the town is very dirty. The municipality also struggles to keep up, reportedly due to financial problems," Beukes said, who is part of a 'Vra is Vry' social media group in Gobabis with 240 members. She enlisted the members of the group along with an advertising group to spread the clean-up campaign message and coordinate the campaign.
The response from the community was mostly positive, Beukes said.
"We want the town to look clean and tidy before the tourists drive through here for the holiday," Beukes said.
Motivation
Beukes said the clean-up campaign will definitely be repeated, but more coordinators and helpers are needed. Machinery is also required to pick up the piles of trash, as the municipality’s equipment is reportedly broken.
The town's rubbish heaps, where the garbage "blows all over the place and isn’t pushed together or burned," also need to be fenced off, she said.
"I think the public will cooperate better next time, now that they’ve seen it can work. Institutions can regularly clean around them and in their streets. Motivate everyone at work to help," she said.
She emphasised that more attention should be given to raising awareness about not littering.
"People in Gobabis believe they create jobs by throwing trash on the ground. That’s not true. Please use the bins that are located throughout the town and keep our town clean!"
Beukes expressed her gratitude to Plastic Packaging, Shoprite, Megasave and Spandiens 2, Cymot, as well as the residents of Gobabis.
