Public servants occupy a unique and vital position in any government system. They are the backbone of efficient governance, tasked with serving the people impartially and without bias. Their core duty is to deliver quality services to the public, regardless of political beliefs, affiliations, or backgrounds. For democracy to function effectively, public servants must remain neutral, working collaboratively with all political parties – including opposition members – to ensure smooth service delivery.Unfortunately, we have seen instances where some public servants serve selectively, exhibiting bias and turning away citizens with the weak justification that they did not vote for them or are from the "enemy" party. This behaviour undermines the principles of democracy, fostering division rather than unity. Public servants must remember that their role is to represent all constituents, irrespective of political affiliations, and promote inclusivity, not exclusion.Serving everyone, regardless of political affiliationPublic servants must recognise that their work extends beyond political lines. They are not representatives of a particular party, ideology, or government administration, but rather, they serve the entire population – citizens who hold diverse political views, social backgrounds and beliefs. In a democratic system, while governments may change, public service must remain consistent and unwavering in its commitment to serving the public at large. By upholding this principle, public servants can foster trust and confidence across all sectors of society, ensuring that no one feels excluded or disenfranchised due to their political stance.Embracing proposals from all political partiesA crucial aspect of public service is the ability to consider and evaluate proposals from all political parties objectively. Whether the proposal comes from the ruling party or the opposition, public servants must assess its potential impact on the public and implement solutions that benefit everyone. Public servants should not be swayed by political pressures but should instead prioritise the common good, relying on rigorous, evidence-based decision-making processes.A willingness to accept and evaluate proposals from all sides can lead to better policies and solutions that are inclusive and meet the needs of a broader population.
