EDITORIAL: Wasting City money on Kanime pursuit
Abraham Kanime's pursuit by the City of Windhoek appears to be an absurd, implausible waste of money for a municipality struggling financially.
Even a law layman would question the wisdom and the chances of success in such a ridiculous lawsuit. This is a step too far for an administration whose only legacy to date has been fighting, backstabbing and mudslinging.
Windhoek ratepayers must, in fact, sue councillors - in their personal capacities - when their childish pursuit of Kanime is proven by the court to have been an exercise in futility from its inception.
Kanime may not be the holiest man in town, but he is bound by a written agreement. If the contract was unlawful, it would be more appropriate to target those who presented it to him on behalf of the City.
Our money as residents is being toyed with by people who have no record of achievement since taking office. These are people who spend their days at council calling each other ‘idiots’ on WhatsApp groups instead of delivering services for which they were elected.
The legal fees being spent on this High Court battle is no pocket change. It’s a lot of money that could fix potholes in Katutura or dysfunctional communal water taps for the city’s downtrodden, who brave heavy downpours in the dead of night to visit nearby element-infested bushes when diarrhoea from dirty water strikes.
