EDITORIAL: Time to Help Netumbo and Swapo Succeed

Namibians have entrusted Swapo and president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah with a mandate to lead the country toward prosperity over the next five years. While Nandi-Ndaitwah’s historic victory was was more pronounced at 58% percent, Swapo’s overall success came with a narrow margin, supercharged only by the enduring legacy of its forebears whose bravery continues to resonate with many voters.

Nonetheless, victory, no matter how slender - is still victory. As patriotic citizens, our duty is now to support the president-elect in achieving success, because her success will be synonymous with Namibia’s progress. Politics cannot always be the priority.

In fact, any noble efforts by Swapo itself deserve the backing of all Namibians. If the ruling party transforms itself into a more people-centered movement that prioritizes the needs of the nation above its own, why not support such an endeavour?

If new hospitals are built, more jobs are created, and more families are fed, why would anyone oppose such meaningful progress, regardless of their political affiliations? As the book of Ecclesiastes teaches us, there is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.

When the campaign period ends, the focus must shift to the collective good of the country. Wishing failure upon Swapo in the next five years is equivalent to wishing hardship upon the people of Namibia. Whoever is entrusted to lead this great nation must succeed - for the benefit of everyone.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, in particular, requires our collective and unwavering support. There should be no sabotage, no ill will. The majority of Namibians have given her their mandate, and their choice must be respected.
