EDITORIAL: IPC must come clean
The alleged money trail linking the International University of Management (IUM) to the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), as reported in New Era yesterday, is highly disturbing.
Since 3 February, when IPC launched its new GWM fleet of bakkies, the party has been sending the media on a wild goose chase in order to cover up the origins of its new vehicles.
Last week, Namibian Sun asked party leader Panduleni Itula who Rover Trading, which made the purchase, was and in what context it bought cars on his party’s behalf. The dentist-cum-politician said this was a figment of our imagination.
His attitude in this matter has been shocking – especially for a man who blabbers non-stop about transparency and ethics in political leadership. Itula aside, IUM didn’t do much to contextualise its role in this saga. A fast-growing university entangled in allegations of financing a political party cannot simply throw in a few dismissive quotes and hope the debacle will fade away like a fart on a windy summer day.
How does the university explain the transactions to Rover Trading, which seems to have been used as a conduit to purchase IPC vehicles? Itula’s evasiveness in this matter has been suspect from day one. Now it makes sense why he thought revealing the true source of this funding would send the country into overdrive. It did – and in a way that bites deep into his reputation as a man who placated himself as a transparent potential president.
