Who is the fairest of them all?

The student’s representative council (SRC) of the Namibia University of Science and Technology hosted the annual Mr and Mrs First Year pageant at the Zoo Park amphitheatre last week. The theme of the event was “Black Panther”.

The SRC also held a ceremony to hand over prizes which were won by the contestants.

In addition to prizes being awarded to Mr and Miss First Year, prizes were also awarded to the runner-up of each category.

Eight contestants scooped the titles of first and second princesses and princes, Mr and Miss Personality and Mr and Miss photogenic.

The judging panel consisted of Nangula Nanyemba, Meriam Kaxuxwena, Adora Kisting, Toivo Nuugulu and Leroy Muhamed. The contestants also shared the stage with a star studded line-up of local musical artists like Tate Buti, Swart baster, Lil D, Jaliza, the Dogg and many more.

The ecstatic Nelago Johannes and Tawanda Dzinomwa took home the coveted title of Miss and Mr Nust First Year, beating 18 other hopefuls.

Theresia Lucas and Philip Mootseng won the titles first princess and prince while Thomas Egunda and Roux-Ché Higoam were acknowledged as second prince and princess.

Theresia Lucas did not only walk away with the title of first princess but she also scooped the title of Miss Photogenic and Meke Lilonga took Mr Photogenic. Tangeni Ndeitunga and Dionne Louw were named Mr and Miss Personality.

After being crowned as Mr Nust First Year, Tawanda Dzinomwa, a bachelor of accounting student, said that it felt overwhelming. “I feel very privileged to have been chosen to represent an institution as prestigious as Nust,” he said.

H said that he understands this is just the beginning of making a difference and that he looks forward to taking on the responsibilities that come with the title. “I expect to be the voice of the students as well as someone who will embody the brand of Nust in everything that I do,” he said.

The determined queen, Nelago Johannes, said that she has a lot planned for this year. “I have always been strategic I believe in helping others and I will use this title to do just that,” she said.

She encourages the youth to follow their dreams and not to take shortcuts to success.

Both winners expressed that the competition was tough. According to them the finalists were all unique and special. “They gave me a run for my money and made me push harder and I would like to thank them for that,” she she said.
